Apparently it caught up with me

Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at 11:49 pm

After an hour or so in the recliner, playing with Vista and half-watching the TV, I started to feel drowsy. This would no doubt be due to my staying up ’til nearly 1:30 last night - playing with Vista and half-watching the TV - but nonetheless, I didn’t make it much past 8:30 before I nodded off. It was just after 11 when I woke up to CSI:NY yammering away on the tube, and since I dislike the CSI ilk on general principles, I’m now half-watching Deadwood.

Deadwood is one of those shows I’ve heard lots of good things about, but I didn’t watch it from the beginning, and have always meant to catch up by renting the previous seasons. I’ve just never made the committment. I will say that the “extremely coarse language” warning is justified, though - the f-bomb is dropped with casual frequency. How do they know the old west was so vulgar?

If you haven’t done so, I encourage you to take a look through Stuck in Customs’ Flickr photostream. There is some spectacular work in there. He’s fortunate enough to not only be a great photographer and post-processor, but a world traveller, which makes for some vibrant and scenic images.

Is the wow really now?

Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at 12:41 am

I think so.

I installed Vista Ultimate tonight, after getting home from my last 14-hour day at work (they hired a new guy who will take over the overtime). Ultimate, the full-blown super-deluxe version of Vista, from a deleted partition, a total blank slate, to logon prompt, in about 30 minutes.

It’s even cooler than Beta 2. And RC1. And RC2. Yeah, sure, it’s not much different (although faster), but it IS the real deal. It’s out, it’s official. Giddy-up.

I was going to wait until I knew all my apps would work, but, well, we all know what a geek I am. OK, maybe not all. But I am. Take my word for it.

And while we’re on the subject of the wow, check out this guy’s photos. Incredible.

Thanks for your concern, and no, I’m not dead

I know! Four whole days without a post. WTeverlovingF?

I’ve been super-busy otherwise computering. I needed to buy a ‘premium’ download account on a filehosting site, and it’s good for a month, so I’ve been making the best of it, getting my money’s worth, as it were. I’m now over 25,000 songs in iTunes (and I’ve yet to import everything). That’s all I’ll say.

I’m also prepping The Slab for Vista. Cleaning up my external hard drive to back everything up to it. Importing tons of songs that have languished unimported for months. Burning FLAC and OGG downloads so I can then rip them back to MP3, and give away the CDs.

I beat RB in pool Friday night, 11-10. He never led all night. At one point, it was 9-4 for me. He battled back to tie it at 10, but I would not relinquish the match. It was definitely one of our better ones.

The Roughnecks game, and then to The Metropolitan Grille - AKA YuppieLand - for Trish’s birthday on Saturday night. I bailed at midnight, like Cinderella, because it was pissing me off trying to get a drink. Wanting to punch assholes in the head at the bar means you’re not enjoying the experience.

Then the downloading began, and I’ve barely crawled out of my cave other than to work for 3½ hours last night. Yes, work, on a Sunday night. Accounts had to be modified - a couple hundred of them - and it has to be done after hours, and in this case, on the weekend. Same story next weekend, only M-Z.

So here we are. I didn’t even watch TV tonight, and I’m going to bed right away. Now you’re caught up, Reader’s Digest Condensed Version style.

Someone needs to teach KFC economics

Thursday, January 25, 2007 at 10:52 pm

I’m watching GA on ABC, so this means United Statesian commercials. An ad was just on for the KFC buffalo snacker, for 99 cents. Do you know how much they are here? $2.29. Two dollars and twenty-nine cents. I’m sorry, but even a bad guess at the US-Cdn exchange rate would net me better math than that.

It’s one of the perks of a new site

Thursday, January 25, 2007 at 10:22 pm

I’ve decided to allow myself not to post. With my old site, or my ‘this site in its previous life’, I always felt an unexplained compulsion to post every day. I had twnges of guilt if I didn’t. I’d post something, anything, just to mark the date. Then, when I switched to WordPress (which I totally dig, btw), and added the calendar sidebar widget, there it was: a glaring non-hyperlinked date.

Sidebar of a different kind: I laugh EVERY TIME at the new Dodge Nitro commercial, the one with the boosting.

I’m trying to overcome my daily posting need. I’ve posted some brief, blurt-like posts in the last while, but only because I didn’t feel creative, and not because of any compulsion. Really.

HOWEVER… I will post some more tonight.

I’m predicting this will be Marty’s year

OSCAR.com - 79th Annual Academy Awards - Nominee List

I haven’t seen The Departed yet, but I have this gut feeling that Martin Scorcese will FINALLY win his first Directing Oscar this year. He’s been overlooked for WAY too many years.

Mark my words. Just not with a permanent marker - they’re really hard to wash off.

I’m a bad friend

Monday, January 22, 2007 at 10:35 pm

My brother just reminded me that we both forgot Garn’s birthday six days ago. It’s a little worse for him because he’s really one of G’s best friends from back in the day, but I have my own claim to that kind of memory lapse, too. At the beginning of the month, I forgot Brad’s birthday. In that case, I remembered a week late, and felt like a dork, so couldn’t bring myself to phone and explain I’m actually that dork.

So both of us forgot the birthdays of one of our best friends. Nice. Maybe I should start plugging them into Outlook.

Anyway, Happy Belated Birthday both of you, from the dork in Calgary.

Enough, already!

The Pickton trial just started today, and already I’m fed up with the amount of news coverage it’s getting. Not necessarily the type of coverage, just the frequency with which we’re being inundated by it. And they say it’s going to last a year. Fantastic.
