I’m officially bagged

Monday, April 30, 2007 at 9:22 am

I couldn’t get to sleep until after 1:30 last night, so waking up at 5:45 held interesting challenges. Most notably, the fact that I didn’t hear my radio at all, and slept through the alarm for 15 minutes. What this means is that no amount of coffee will wake me up, and I’ll definitely be having a nap when I get home after work.

With my full week that just ended, I realized that I didn’t once have an after-work nap, which would account for why I felt so sluggish from time to time. I plan on riding my bike to work as much as possible over the next five months, so I’m going to have to do something to get enough sleep. I’m just one of those people who can’t bring himself to go to bed before midnight, which is not ideal if you intend to get up at 6 AM to bike 40 minutes to work.

That wasn’t the problem last night. I did hit the hay late - about 12:30 - but I couldn’t fall asleep. Too much on my mind, and once the grey matter starts churning and I’m not tired enough, it’s disaster for sleep. Usually I’m tired enough that I’m out within minutes of laying down, so I just got more an more annoyed as the minutes ticked by.

Rommell wants to do an after-work ride tomorrow or Wednesday, and I’m all for it. He’s in better after-winter shape than I am, but was still bagged on Saturday after the trip to Golden, so that doesn’t bode well for me. Gotta get those wheels in motion, literally.

Along came… OK, we’ll go with Polly

Monday, April 30, 2007 at 12:05 am

I’m watching Along Came Polly on Citytv. It’s by far my favourite Jenn movie, for many reasons, not the least of which is that she looks amazing. So far, the cheating bitch wife has just caused the demise of the marriage. At least she wasn’t a moneygrubber. Hank Azaria is hilarious, too: “Are you for scuba?”

Yes, it’s been a chock-full week since I last posted. That’ll be my excuse. That, along with my apparent lack of compulsion to blog will explain the dearth of posts. Or at least I hope it will.

Tuesday, ruzz called me on my way home from work, and we headed out to shoot some photos. The big man had never been to Big Hill Springs Provincial Park, and it turned out to be a better than expected location for an evening/dusk shoot. We spent three hours capturing waterfalls in the low light, and it was dark by the time we left, both very happy with the results. My favourite shot is in the previous post.

The next night, I hooked up with Tim and Chris to work on Blake’s laptop. They’re the crew from the company I’ve been doing a little after-hours support for, and are in Vegas right now for a conference. In fact, while we were in Classic Jack’s having a few drinks and wings prior to putting the laptop up on the hoist, Tim offered to pay for my flight and hotel if I wanted to come to the conference with them. Sadly, this week at work is going to be a little too busy for me to try and take the first three days of it off with next to no notice, so I had to pass.

Early in the week, I got an email from Coco Love Alcorn letting me know she was going to be performing at the Ironwood on Thursday, so I went to take in the show. She was on the bill with Jaylene Johnson and Jenny Allen, who were great, and of course Coco was fantastic. She does amazing scat, which I first discovered when she did some backup vocals for 54-40, but her voice (and songwriting) are spectacular. By the time I got home, it was 1 AM, and by the time I imported my photos and edited a few, it was 1:45. (I slept in the next morning)

Then on Friday, I bailed out of work at noon, and ruzz and I hit the road for more photography. We racked up 385 km on his car in ten hours, travelling the 1A (with a side trip to Waiprous) and then the 40 into K-Country and making several stops wherever the hell we felt like it. I’m not as happy with as many of the photos from that trip, but I did get some good ones, and it was great to just go in search of images… wherever.

Ruzz was craving Outback steak, and since I’d never been, we made a pit stop once we got back to town. They make some pretty good cheesy fries, but they’re not “better than sex”, as the big guy claimed. I was pretty impressed with the food, though, so I’m sure it won’t be the last time I go.

Yesterday, errands downtown, including some shopping in the beltline (The Camera Store and a new CD at Megatunes)(yes, some of us still buy them), then some Wicked Wedge. Afterwards, RB had to try to continue getting back on the winning track at pool, since I had beat him 4 of 5 matches prior to last Friday. He’s won the last two, though, so he’s getting back to his old ways.

I was invited on a bike trip to Golden on Saturday, but the boys were leaving early and coming back late, and since I have yet to be out on a bike this season, I didn’t think my first ride should be an all-day one on Mount Seven. There’ll be more next times, though - this bunch goes every weekend, as well as Thursday evenings.

So, today, I took it easy. I haven’t left the house. I thought about going to the comic convention to stalk see Morena Baccarin, but the lineup last year was apparently insane to get in, and I’m sure it would’ve been moreso this year. I also thought about going for a ride, but winds gusting to 52 kmh dissuaded me.

Instead, I turned on the TV for the first time in four days, watched Stand By Me and the ends of both hockey games that were on. I had Vietnamese for dinner and watched Along Came Polly, then took three hours to write this post in between the movie and Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters.

Maybe I should get to bed.

More hockey

What? You thought because the Flames are out that it’s done? I’m watching game 7 of the Vancouver-Dallas series, and it’s not just down to one game, it’s down to one period. The first was all Stars, the second was the Canucks’ frame, and now it’s tied 1-up heading into the final twenty minutes.

Come on, Canucks, don’t make me cheer for Ottawa!

Stick a fork in us

The Flames are done, and it was no real surprise. Once again, Kipper can only do so much, and for my money, we were still way too sloppy and had poor puck control. That, and letting Detroit dance on in and rip shots off like that…

Next year. At least Tortorella can shut the hell up for now with the Lightning out, too.

I will say that the fines for McLennan’s chop are ridiculous. Franzen’s a diver.

OT. Sudden death, possibly to the Flames’ playoffs. I don’t like this.

Mmmm…

Swordfish. Halle looking her absolute finest. Obviously TBS will cut the topless scene, but she still wears some of the coolest clothes.

I went to see Vacancy tonight - it’s a decent thriller, and Luke Wilson was better than I thought he would be. Not really worth $11.45, but a definite renter or second-run theatre trip.

I also had one of Wendy’s new frescata sandwiches. Not that impressive - mainly because of the too-chewy bun - but not greasy. That and the baked potato and the light lemonade and I didn’t feel so guilty eating there.

Conditional optimism

The last two periods were a pathetic, embarassing showing on the part of the Flames. There’s no WAY they deserved a win out of that. The record indicates that the home team should win tomorrow, but that was such a horrid showing, I have to wonder if Detroit didn’t succeed in rattling Calgary. I hope they can keep it together and maintain the status quo, then overcome it for (hopefully) game 7.

Shit

Someone break Holmstrom’s legs.

I’ve got news for you, Draper, your guy can’t skate, and that’s not Iginla’s fault. You and your fans who can’t fill an arena should back the fuck off.

Good grief

Calgary came out better in the first period than in the previous two games in Detroit, but not good enough. Now, in the second, they look poised to slip back into the crappy play that cost them those losses - a horrible horrible power play that ended up with a penalty shot goal for the Wings. Inexcusable, regardless of how much better Detroit’s penalty kill is. Calgary barely made it to the attacking zone.

I’ll reiterate that I’ve never played hockey, but from where I sit, the Flames’ passing is atrocious. Their puck control - or lack of it - is a big factor in the 1-0 score so far. That and their lousy face-off record.

What? The Joe Louis Arena isn’t sold out? Detroit, you don’t deserve a hockey team. Hang your heads!
